When there is a problem in your bathroom and it’s plumbing it seems like everything is chaos. When a component in the bathroom fails or starts to leak water you’ll need to take steps to minimize any damage done by water to your home. In this article I’ll discuss some of the things you’ll need to do if your bathroom starts to give you problems.
What You Should Do When a Leak in the Bathroom Occurs
There can be all sorts of problems when your plumbing in the bathroom starts to malfunction. From waste water not draining out to water leaking all over the place when a problem occurs in the bathroom you’ll need to address it as soon as possible. Most homes are equipped with features that I will go over in this article but if you don’t have these in your home you’ll need to contact a plumber to make sure it doesn’t cause more damage.
Damage from Leaking Water
Leaking water coming from a toilet, sink, or tub can seep into the floor and other places. This leaking water can cause all sorts of water damage especially if the bathroom that is leaking is on the second floor. Water from the leak can damage ceilings and walls underneath the bathroom and will need to be stopped. If water continues to leak for a period of time it may even cause mold growth to occur in your home. That’s why it’s such an important thing to get it fixed and if you live in Downriver Michigan it’s best to get help by calling Downriver Plumber as soon as possible.
Turn Off the Water to the Toilet, Sink, or Tub
The first thing you’ll need to do is stop using the bathroom that is giving you a problem. You’ll need to turn the water off for any components you can that are causing the problem. If your faucet is leaking then you’ll need to turn that water off. On most homes, a stop valve is used to turn off water to a component so that it can be changed or repaired. I’ve added a picture of a stop valve below:
Most stop valves are located under the sink or behind the toilet. On many bathrooms the tub or shower may not be accessible by the home owners and you’ll need to call a professional plumber. If you can access the stop valve then you can turn the water off by turning the stop valve just like a regular water valve. Simply turn it clockwise until it is tight and the water should be off. Stopping water from leaking is the first step to keeping your home from further damage.
Turn the Main Water Supply Off if You Must
If your bathroom is leaking and you can’t locate the stop valves or they are not accessible you may need to turn off the main water supply to the house. In order to turn off the main water supply to the home you’ll need to look inside the meter box where your home’s water supply comes from. Many times this is in the front yard. There are many different models and you may need to call your local water department to access the valve. They may also send someone out to turn the water off for you.
Time to Call a Plumber
Now that you’ve got the water stopped in your home then you’ll need to make repairs to what ever is causing the water leak. A plumber can repair any damaged components and make your bathroom work flawlessly again. If you’re in the Downriver Michigan area one of the best plumbers are Downriver Plumbers in Michigan. Using a wet dry vacuum you can remove much of the water but in severe cases you may need to call a professional cleanup company to get your home back to normal.
